Alley-oop!

The excitement here at UW-Lacrosse last weekend was the REC’s intramural outdoor 3 v 3 basketball tournament. It consisted of both men and women teams. It took place from 10-4 on the outdoor basketball courts outside of Coate Hall and Eagle Hall, right beside Eagle field. This tournament was offered to all students on campus. If one liked basketball or played it before they could still create a team. It cost teams 12 dollars to participate in this event. This tournament also challenged players to a three-point contest, bag toss, progression shots, a vertical jump test and a skills course.

The energy was very high throughout the entire tournament. The weather was beautiful with a screeching high of 80 degrees. Music played the whole time and an Energy Jelly Belly sponsor was present. Many spectators were present. They could enjoy the games from sitting down with blankets at Eagle Field or the view from their windows in Coate Hall.

There were two courts and each court had two games going on. The games were played bracket style. With first round, second round, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

There were 20 teams in total that competed. 19 of those teams were all men and one team was all ladies. All the teams got to create their own team name.

Those teams were Laux Ballers, 4’s a Crowd, 3 Dudes, The Bucks, KHD, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Get III, Like Mike returns, Ball is Life, Shooters, BB’s Rim Rattlers, DEEZ, Mini Muffins, Wooden Award Finalists, Alley-Oops, TuneSquad, Rim Rockers, Scrote Squad, Premature Shooters and the only girl team, Team Erin.

All the teams came out competitive, with a friendly edge to the game though. We all know how men get about their sports. It was difficult to keep up with all four games happening at one time, but from the looks everybody played to compete and have fun.

The winners were able to call themselves the champions. The best basketball team for the day.

Freshman Matt Guhl was part of the Alley-Oops team which consisted of three other players. Their names were Matthew Behrens, Jeffrey Kasperek and Stuart Swanson.

They registered at 10 a.m. and played their 3 v 3 game right away. Unfortunately, they lost right away in the first round.

Guhl said, “We lost right away, but it was still fun. I got to have a fun competition with my boys.” Even though they did not advance in the tournament, he said he would not mind participating in this event again next year.

“There was so much energy around this event. The music, the weather and just everything going on. From the actually basketball game to the other little games going on, it was a great way to spend my Saturday afternoon.”

Guhl was glad he got to have some fun competition with only a couple weeks left of his first year of college.

The Rec has many fun events held all throughout the year. Make sure to watch for all of them that will be going on next school year.
