The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse inducted seven new members to the UWL Athletic Wall of Fame this past weekend. These former athletes were introduced and honored at the UWL football game vs. Oshkosh on Saturday and held their induction ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017.

Inductees include, Jason Gonnion in football 1991-93, Bill Hehli in tennis as a player 1991-94 and coach 1995- present, Bob Hehli in tennis 1994-97, Julia Rudd Webb in cross country and track and field 2002-06, Mike Schnur in track and field 1994-97, Nina Schubert in gymnastics 2003-06 and  Joe Werner in basketball 2004-07.

With the seven new inductees this year, the UWL Athletic Wall of Fame has a total of 235 members.

Inductee Nina Schubert is a little different than the rest of the inductees this year as she is a native German. She was a three-time National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) champion on the uneven parallel bars, also is one of two gymnasts in NCGA history to claim three championships in the uneven parallel bars, according to uwlathletics.com.

She came to UWL to compete in gymnastics and earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Today she is the diving coach at the Dresden Sport Club in Dresden, Germany.

Remembering her times at UWL she said, “Nationals every year were my most memorable moments during my time at UWL.”

Each inductee spoke during their induction ceremony, each of them thanking their families, friends, teammates and coaches.

“My favorite thing to do was hanging out with the girls (her gymnastics teammates). No matter what we did; it did not matter it was always fun,” reminisced Shubert.

Schubert is the thirtieth Women’s Gymnastics player to be inducted into the UWL Athletic Wall of Fame.

UWL has been going through many changes in the recent years, and in just over a decade since Schubert has graduated said she is amazed.

“UWL has changed quite a bit. Dorm Halls I stayed in do not even exist anymore. I have yet to visit all the new buildings, but from what I have seen I have really enjoyed everything,” she said.

All seven inductees earned multiple spots on All-WIAC teams. Five out of the seven inductees achieved WIAC All-Time Team awards in their respective sports.

The seven inductees this year matches the number of inductees last year, which is the most in the last 18 years.

Inductee Joe Werner this year became the first member of the Wall of Fame that attended UWL in 2007, which is the earliest class of any inductee.

Schubert and fellow inductee Julia Rudd Webb join last year’s inductee Ryan Allen in the 2006 class of inductees.

Bill Hehli is still connected to UWL today coaching both Men’s and Women’s tennis since 1995, he has a career dual record of 640-281 at UWL, winning more with the Women’s team at 345-110 and a 295-171 record with the Men’s team.

These inductees join the likes of former UWL athletes Olympic Silver Medalist Andrew Rock and former Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Bill Schroeder on UWL’s Athletic Wall of Fame.  Although the campus looks much different from when they competed, the athletic prowess of UWL remains.
