Caroline Smith, pop and R&B artist, has been singing and playing music since she was a little girl. She has performed all over the Midwest and, now, she is coming to perform at the Cavalier Theater in La Crosse.

The show starts at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 23. Tickets are $15 plus a fee of $1.82 online at the Cavalier Theater’s website or Caroline Smith’s website. Smith said the audience could expect some pop, soul, high energy, fun and a lot of “lady power.” She will be accompanied by her band, including two back-up singers.

La Crosse is Smith’s first stop on her 2015 tour. She will also be performing in Madison, Milwaukee and Eau Claire, WI, as well as Iowa City, IA, Evanston, IL, Fargo, ND, Duluth, MN and Sioux Falls, SD. Smith has played in La Crosse in the past at the Root Note downtown, so she is not new to the area.

Smith currently has one solo record out called “Half About Being a Woman.” She also has two CDs with her former group, Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps. “Half About Being a Woman” is about self-acceptance and “growing into yourself.” Smith said the record acts as a kind of “voice for women” and relates on a “human level.”

Smith has acted as a “voice for women” in the past. She and Lizzo, another artist, recorded the single “Let ‘em Say” together as a celebration of their two shows together, as well as their passion for “all of the ladies out there that were told they were ‘too this’ and ‘not enough that’.”

People could pay what they wanted for their track. A portion of the proceeds was then donated to The Women’s Foundation of Minnesota.

When it comes to songs, there is no specific, reoccurring theme in her lyrics. Smith just lets it come naturally to her and writes about what she is currently dealing with. Connecting with people is one of the factors that drive her music.

As an artist, her hope is to write “good, timeless songs that stand the test of time,” she said.

Smith was immersed in music from an early age. Her dad taught her to play guitar early on, and her mom loved listening to music, as well. Her mom was the one who “kindly forced” her to start performing and helped Smith get over her stage freight.

Smith started performing seriously when she was seventeen. She started performing acoustic solo when she was in college in Minneapolis, which is also her hometown. Smith said she is grateful for everything that has happened to her so far.

“My first biggest sense of accomplishment was our first sold out show at First Avenue in Minneapolis. It was a surreal moment that signified I made it, because I had seen all my favorite bands play there,” she recalled.
