Becoming executive editor of The Racquet Press, UWL’s only student newspaper, is not a role to be taken lightly. Those who have held this role before know it well, the long nights, countless edits and never ending story assignment ideas will consume your thoughts and time. But past executive editors will also acknowledge the profoundly positive impact being executive editor as has had on their college experience.
It is now time to pass the torch and Jackson Skarp, current multimedia editor of The Racquet, stood out as a standout candidate for the role. Alongside him, current Sports Reporter Paige Geiser will serve as managing editor, and current Arts and Entertainment Reporter Michael Herebers will step into the role of multimedia editor.
“I am really passionate about The Racquet and I want to see it succeed,” said Skarp.
Skarp will be leading the onboarding and training process of new staff come Fall 2025. He can speak to past experience at The Racquet, as the coming semester will mark his 5th semester on the team. This, along with his strengths in communication, will aid him in this leadership role.
“I am very personable, I can talk to a lot of different people, which will be super helpful it not only leading The Racquet team, but building connections with UWL faculty.”
Geiser and Herbers have both completed two semesters as reporters at The Racquet. Both have shown initiative to advance the work of The Racquet outside of what is expected as a reporter. This dedication to the success of this publication is a testament to the quality editors they will be.
Geiser surprised her self by how much she enjoyed being a student journalist. “It will be really cool to help new people coming in and see them spark a passion for journalism like I did,” she said.
“I will always be working not just to get the work done, but to do it well,” said Herbers. “I will bring a lot of creativity into the role as well.”
