Student Senate discusses several resolutions
April 25, 2019
Vice President Jurecki gave an overview of several new student organizations, such as Students for Ethical Leadership within Government and Chess Club.
President O’Connell spoke regarding the Resolution opposing the Senate Bill 150 and Assembly Bill 160. “As of right now, we are going to need to wait and table this resolution indefinitely,” he said.
This suspension was due to word from the legislature that the bills would not be advancing past their current committees, with segregated fees instead being studied by the UW System. “I think we’re going into a good spot with this going to the UW System,” said O’Connell.
The resolution was subsequently tabled by the Senate. Regarding the Resolution to Endorse the FY20 Segregated Fee Package, authored by Sen. Woodmansee, after brief discussion, the resolution passed with 93% of the vote.
The first new resolution to be discussed was the Resolution to Approve the Spring 2019 Election Results. It was found that the College of Liberal Studies Senate election results were inconclusive, and a new election would have to be held.
Next, Senate members held further discussions on the Eagle Dome Referendum results. With students narrowly approving of the dome, Sen. Kallis and Sen. Thering both asked whether approving the election results would by association approve the dome. “When you say accept the results, what exactly does that entail?” said Sen. Thering.
After discussion, it was agreed that approving the election results without adding an amendment clarifying the non-binding nature of the Eagle Dome referendum would thus appear to provide Senate approval of the dome.
The Senate came to the consensus that the two options to address the dome would be not acknowledging the referendum results or the cultivation of a new resolution on whether to approve the dome. Sen. Thering supported a new resolution saying, “we have a week to talk.”
Sen. Moralez moved to suspend the two-week rule and vote on the Resolution immediately for convenience. The resolution to approve the election results passed with 84% of the vote. Following this, senators discussed the Resolution Approving Changes to AIDAC Bylaws authored by Sen. Silva.
The Senate also discussed a Resolution Dissolving the Current Senate Bylaws and Approving the Amended Bylaws. Recommended changes included taking out the pledge of allegiance at the beginning of Senate meetings, as well as removing dissolved committees and adding the Scholarships and Awards Committee.
There was debate over the removal of the Senate agenda structure from the bylaws, with several senators providing feedback on their usefulness. “It’s nice to have that structure there,” said Sen. Horstman.
The Senate ultimately decided to maintain the Senate agenda within its bylaws. The Senate also voted on an amendment that would give the Student Embassy a seat on the Senate. This amendment was rejected with 56% voting nay.
Following discussion of bylaw amendments, the Senate passed the Resolution Recommending Revised Faculty Reporting Syllabi Statement, authored by Alex Becker and Sita Agterberg, with 96% of the vote.
