Recycling at UW-L is now easier than ever

Shelby Roberts, Guest Reporter

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Since
our kindergarten years, we’ve been drilled
to know what these words mean, but living
them out in our daily lives can very quickly
become confusing. To help with this
problem, UW-L has recently adopted single
stream recycling. Single stream recycling
allows paper, plastic, and aluminum to be
recycled into the same bin. This process
makes it easier for students all across campus
to support the local environment and reduce
their carbon footprint.
Every new step in this process brings
about new items that can be recycled instead
of being lost in a landfill. With this new
system, complete lists of acceptable and
not acceptable items can be found online at
www.uwlax.edu/recycling, on the lists inside
residence halls, or on the sides of the recycling
bins outside campus buildings. Plastics 1-7,
flattened cardboard, clean paper products,
aluminum cans and lids, and glass bottles
and jars are recyclable items. Non single
stream recyclable items include food-stained
items, bubble wrap and packing peanuts,
light bulbs, and others. For a complete list see
the online web page. E-Waste, or electronic/
electrical devices, can be given to ITS free of
charge for proper recycling. See uwlax.edu/
ITS/eWaste for details.
Marketing student intern, Briana Nelson
has been monumental in getting posters,
online resources, and general awareness of
the newly adopted program across campus.
She helped in the design and distribution
of recyclable goods lists. She hopes, when
students review the lists, they realize the
incredible increase of items that can be
recycled. She also hopes this system can reach
as many ears as possible and give a broad, clear
understanding to the campus. This process
is monumental to UW-L and brings our
campus one step closer to sustainable living.

sustainable system, visit uwlax.edu/recycling
