UW-L children’s theatre charms all ages

Emily Markham, Staff Reporter

Once upon a time in the kingdom of UW-La Crosse, there was a university putting on a play for its children’s theater production.  This season’s show, “One In the Basket,” is the combination of eight different fairytales.  Each story has its own lesson to teach, such as: selflessness, working together, or accepting others.  This show isn’t just your run of the mill production, though; it is unique in countless different ways.

With eight fairytales and a limited number of actors, many of the actors are playing four or more characters throughout the show, but they are able to set each of these characters apart using accents, different physical movements, and, of course costumes.  Also, all the sound in this production is live, meaning there will be pot and pan banging, animal noises, live instruments and more all happening right backstage.  In this play, the characters will be doing their own narration instead of having a separate narrator.  Although this show is for children’s theater, there’s a little something for all ages to enjoy!

As sophomore Makenna Johnson—a chameleon with her various roles—puts it, “The characters are all different ages and are very relatable with the things they want and the choices they make. The lighting, sound, and costumes are all very fun, and who doesn’t like being brought back to childhood through a few great fairy tales?”
The best part about this show though, is that is it interactive.  The actors will talk to the kids and ask them questions throughout the performance.  So go invite your niece, nephew, or younger siblings—or even just connect with your inner child because this will be a show you don’t want to miss!
