On Saturday, Oct. 19, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse hosted “Illusions”, the longest running drag show in La Crosse. The show featured Champagne Beige, Holiday Rose, the Live Vocals of Scotty, Cory AKA Mr. Showmanship, along with Solitaire Noell Beige and special guests Iconica and Toxicc.
The event was emceed by John Unnasch, who has been involved with “Illusions” since its first days over 18 years ago. Over the course of its existence, the show has sold out for nearly every single show.
Over 300 people attended this year’s event, including third-year student Charleigh Hanson, who was involved with the performance by handing out presents from Unnasch and had high praise for the event.
“I had the best night of my life. That was probably the best drag show I’ve ever been to,” said Hanson.
While attendees tipped the performers during the performances, proceeds from ticket sales will go to the UWL Pride Center. Previous “Illusions” shows have also raised funds for the La Crosse community, including Toys For Tots.
The Racquet Press spoke with Unnasch after the performance about what “Illusions” means to him, and to the broader La Crosse community.
“It’s one thing to perform in Vegas, it’s another thing to perform in La Crosse, Wisconsin and get 300 people to come in and forget about everything for 90 minutes. And the thing that is so unique about it is, the thing that makes them forget about all the nastiness and the horribleness in this world, is the thing that a lot of people say is the downfall of this world,” said Unnasch.
“Illusions” hasn’t been the only drag show held at UWL; read more about last year’s show, featuring student and staff drag queens and kings.
