Every Wednesday students at the University of Wisconsin La- Crosse can count on a sweet gesture to brighten their week: Free Cookie Wednesday, sponsored by LuMin Church.
This weekly tradition represents community generosity. Each week, a different local parish in the Coulee region sponsors the cookie selection, consisting of around 500 cookies.
Kathryn Thompson, pastor at LuMin church says that the cookies are baked by retirees and delivered to LuMin to be handed out each week to students at UWL near the clocktower.
This simple act of service is intended to help spread happiness on campus.
“One thing I see from students [when they get a cookie] is pure joy, and a genuine relief,” Thompson said.
Including their initiative to help students de-stress, most weeks a local therapy dog named Whiskey joins them, allowing students to come up and pet them.
“A lot of students are missing their pups at home, and we want to provide students with a little break and recognize a spot of joy in their Wednesday,” Thompson said.
Pastor Thompson says these cookies represent more than just a midday snack.
“This initiative is a reflection of LuMin’s commitment to radical hospitality,” Thompson said. “We want to offer a welcome to all people, regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation or any other category society uses to differentiate between people. It’s about creating a space where everyone feels seen and accepted, especially those whom the church and society have put on the margins.”
The church also holds other events for students, allowing them to be a resource for anyone on campus regardless of religious affiliation:
Wednesday nights they host Homework and Noodle night, starting at 4:30.
Dec 8. LuMin will be hosting a Packers and Prep night, allowing for students to do homework while connecting with one another.
In the spring new programming aimed at caring for oneself and managing stress will be available.
“We are here to be part of a support system while students are here, and all folks are welcome here at Lumin, even if it is just for one conversation,” Thompson said.
So students – next Wednesday grab a cookie near the clocktower and enjoy a homemade treat.
