The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is home to over dozens of clubs which allow students to connect and bond over their shared interests. Recently a new club has joined their ranks: the UWL Pickleball Club. Despite initial concerns about attendance when developing the club, Pickleball’s growing popularity helped the club appeal to students throughout campus.
“Our first meeting on campus I remember we were nervous. We were like, ‘What if nobody shows up?’ But then ten of our friends came and they were all in the first row and then people started to filter in and it ended up being a pretty big meeting,” said Club Vice President Ethan Michels.
The UWL Pickleball Club’s goal is to provide as many students as they can with the experience of playing pickleball. In achieving this goal, the club has collaborated with a local La Crossee business The Blue Zone Pickleball. The Blue Zone enables the Pickleball Club to play year-round by providing courts and equipment. In turn, the club assists The Blue Zone by working on their social media.
“I mean this wouldn’t exist without them. Obviously, pickleball is an expensive sport so without them and what they do none of these kids would be able to play pickleball…a big thing we do for them is social media which allows students to get involved in the social media aspect of the club and provides hands on experience,” said Club President Mason Sternard.
Aside from creating partnerships with local businesses, the club has formed a strong culture that supports players at every level of the game. Whether you’re a more seasoned player or looking to learn the ropes, the club provides the right experience.
“We have members of various skill levels that come here and if you want to play against the best you absolutely can, but there are some people that come here and want to volley against their friend. It’s all about building those skills and coming out here to get a little movement in,” commented Michels.
The club’s bi-weekly meetings allow for students to come together despite their busy college life. Additionally, the club serves to strengthen friendships or develop new ones.
“I mean, it’s a great time. I have a bunch of friends here right now playing so it’s a great time to connect with them during the week, and outside of school with our busy schedule it’s a great time during the week where we can see each other and meet new people too,” said club member Jack Backman.
In the first year of the club’s existence the club grew to over 50 members ready to play pickleball. Seeing this growth from a new campus club has provided the opportunity for leadership to look back and be proud of the community the club was able to create.
“My favorite part is just the people I’ve been able to meet throughout this club and know that I was able to form friendships amongst other people that join the club,” said Sternard.
