On April 29 at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team took part in a match against St. Paul, Minnesota’s Hamline University. The Eagles advanced to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament Semifinals with a victory of 16-8 over Hamline University (Minn.) during the first round.
With this win the Eagles improve to 13-4 for their season while the Pipers finished 10-6. UWL’s 13 wins this season set a single-season record for the team. Back in 2023 the Eagles won 12 games (12-5) and in 2024 (12-6). UWL advanced as the third-seed and played at second-seed UW-River Falls in the tournament semifinals on Friday, May 1, where they unfortunately lost, resulting in a 13-5 as their final record for the season.
Hamline took the lead with goals from Aoi Suzuki and Reagan Zywicki before UWL soared ahead and took the next three. Megan Maloney scored at 10:36, cutting the lead 2-1, followed by Evie Brilz who tied it at 2-2 with a time of 5:08 left in the first quarter. Emily Wrobbel was the one who advanced them further with :57 left on the clock she ended the first quarter with the Eagles in the lead (3-2).
Following in the second quarter, Ema Rehder tied the game with an assist from Suzuki (3-3). Brilz’ goal at 11:18 with an assist from Anna Millard gave UWL the lead (4-3). Zywicki tied the game with 10:31 left before the Eagles scored the final three goals of the first half taking a 7-4 lead.
UWL scored a total of six goals in the third quarter while Hamline only scored two. Emma Halweg cut the deficit 7-5 at 14:09 before Maloney made it 8-5 at 12:01. Two goals from Millard and one from Ava Schiltz and Tori Katzenmeyer gave UWL a lead of 12-5. Zywicki cut it 12-6 but Brilz advanced the Eagles’ once again (13-6).
Millard had a pair of goals in the fourth quarter and Katzenmeyer also scored for the Eagles. Kayli Starkey advanced two more goals for the Pipers in the fourth quarter. Stefania Rossi earned the victory for the Eagles recording 10 saves while Lola Brouwer took the loss for the Pipers finishing with ten saves.
Following this game, UWL played against the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and faced an unfortunate loss. UWL finished the game with 19 shots, nine of which were on goal. Brilz led the Eagles with two goals and Millard had team-high of seven shots. Rossi took the loss finishing with five saves and team-leading five ground balls. UW-River Falls had 26 shots, 14 on goal and Annelise Rommeck earned the win with four saves.
