Ask 5: Students share why they chose UWL

As the semester commences and students start to settle into their new classes, most students take time to ask themselves why the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse is the school for them.

Some have decided that UWL’s education is the object that lured them in. However, others have decided that it was La Crosse’s beautiful and vast natural aspects that sealed the deal.

“You know, I really like the curriculum and the way the university was headed. I saw a lot of good things happening, and we can see the fruition of our investments in the school with the rec and the new Student Union,” senior Jack Lawlis mentioned.

Lawlis continued to comment that he likes the small class size because it allows students to interact with the UWL professors in a way that is not common in large universities.

Similarly, junior Ben Pietrek answered that he likes the size of the school and added, “It’s not too big or too small, and it obviously has great academics.”

Education is not the only reason that students chose UWL. The campus and the city of La Crosse offers a beautiful landscape, which many students enjoy.

“I really like the layout of the campus. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to go into and I’m still not positive, but I know there are good programs for everything,” freshman Anna Sturzl said.

It’s more than just the campus, La Crosse has a lot to offer, according to freshman Haley Ehn.

“I heard it was really pretty with all the bluffs and everything. It also has a good science program,” said Ehn.

For some students like Ehn, it is the recommendation from current students and graduates that urges students to come to UWL. However, for students like junior Claire Holzschuh, the choice to go to UWL was natural.

“I always knew I wanted to go here before I even toured the campus. I looked it up and researched all the majors and minors and I thought they would be applicable to me. Then, I toured it and had the gut feeling that I should be here. So here I am and I love it, so I am really glad I chose UWL,” Holzschuh commented.

Students at UWL are here for a reason. The spectrum of reasons is extensive, ranging from the education UWL has to offer to the beauty of the city itself.

No matter the reason, students come from towns close by to cities many miles away to learn and immerse themselves in the experience and education that UWL has to offer.
