The La Crosse area has recently welcomed Hollandberry Pannekoeken as it opens a new location in the heart of downtown. The restaurant opened in March 2026 in the former Wells Fargo bank building at 200 6th St. S.
Owner Tasos Psomas said the expansion has been years in the making. Their other location in Rochester, Minnesota has operated under his ownership since 1986, after becoming independent from a previous franchise.
Psomas said he first attempted to bring the restaurant to La Crosse in the early 1990s, but plans fell through after being outbid on multiple properties.
“I’ve always had my eye on La Crosse,” Psomas said. The new location reminded Psomas of the restaurant’s original Rochester location, which also benefited from being in a central area of town.
Since opening, the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
“We thought it would be more of a slow growth like Rochester,” Psomas said. “But here, the response from the community has been shocking. It’s been wonderful.”
Hollandberry Pannekoeken specialty is in Dutch style pancakes known as pannekoeken, which are larger and thinner than traditional American pancakes. It is prepared and can be served with both sweet and savory toppings. Though known for its pannekoeken, Psomas said the menu offers many different options for customers.
“We do a great job with breakfast—omelets, skillets,” Psomas said. “But one of my favorites is our burgers. We hand-patty all fresh ground beef.”
The restaurant places importance on using fresh and locally sourced ingredients when available. Local nearby farms provide the restaurant with multiple deliveries of eggs every week. They are also working on partnering with other local suppliers for more ingredients.
“We try to buy everything as fresh and as local as we can,” Psomas said.
Even though the La Crosse location has just opened, Psomas said there is already interest in future expansion, particularly within Wisconsin.
As the restaurant begins its next chapter in La Crosse, Psomas said he is focused on steady growth moving forward.
